Biodegradation Testing

Biodegradable materials have a lot of applications in environmental care, packaging, and even agriculture. To guarantee the quality and degradation of these materials, a number of qualifying tests need to be undertaken in detail. CD BioSciences-Advanced Materials is one of the top providers of material solutions. We are known for providing our clients' materials with innovative biodegradation testing services. We assist our clients in determining the harm a material poses to the environment and certify that the materials and products meet the new ecological regulations.

Purpose of Degradation Testing

Biodegradation testing is defined as the evaluation of the rate and extent of a material's ability to be converted into carbon dioxide, water, inorganic matter, and biomass by the actions of the microorganisms, bacteria, and even fungi in nature. The goal of the experiment is to establish whether or not a material can naturally degrade within a defined period, in order to prevent excess pollution of the environment and assist in sustainable development.

Principles of Biodegradation Testing

Biodegradation testing is usually performed in a natural setting or simulated environment to test an organism's rate of degrading material such as carbon dioxide or methane. This particular testing measures the rate at which certain materials are degraded based on a fixed set of conditions. For this kind of assay, soil, compost, water or any sort of natural setting can be used, and using this the rate at which the material degrades can be monitored and measured.

Our Services

Degradation Rate Testing

In order to evaluate a material's biodegradability we analyze how quickly the material is able to break down in a certain environment.

CO2 Release Testing

We determine the degree of degradation by monitoring the amount of carbon dioxide released when a material decomposes under microbial action.

Mass Loss Rate Assay

We evaluate the mass loss during degradation by determining the weight change of a specimen.

Evaluation of Changes in Chemical Structure

We can analyze the change in the chemical structure of a material before and after degradation to assess the degradation effect.

Environmental Impact Evaluation

During the degradable process assessment, the factor estimating the potential effect or impact on the environment is also done and includes pollution assessment of water and soil degradation.

Degradation Product Analysis

The substances that are released during the degradation process are tested to ensure no harmful chemical substances are released.

Biodegradation Testing Methods

Measuring Respiration

Measure the degradation capability of material under the action of microbes by first estimating the rate of oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide production during respiration.

Assessing Material Degradation in Soil

To assess the disintegration of matter within the soil, we conduct the process of material decomposition within the soil and observe the soil's ability to degrade the specific material.

Examining Material Degradation in Water

In order to perform an analysis of how materials get degraded when submerged in water, we do experiments in both freshwater and seawater to determine the changes in water degradation efficiency.

Testing Oxidative and Photodegradation

We determine the oxidative and photodegradation of materials through simulation of air exposure in order to know the photolysis degradation capability of the material.

Testing Process

The process of biodegradation testing usually consists of the following steps:

1

Sample Acceptance

After clients provide the samples to be tested, we clarify the testing needs and the testing environment.

4

Data Acquisition

Real-time collection of carbon dioxide, methane, and other gases produced during the degradation process by specialized instruments, recording the mass loss and other physicochemical changes in the samples.

2

Sample Pre-treatment

Based on the pre-defined methods of testing, the samples are modified, for instance, they are cut or dried under controlled study conditions.

5

Data Analysis

Examine the resulting data in order to analyze the sample's characteristics and appropriateness to environmental norms.

3

Test Execution

The samples are placed in a controlled environment based on the selected test model (for instance compost and soil degradation) for observation of performance changes and the degradation process.

6

Report Generation

Combining the results of the analysis we prepare a testing report which can be useful for the clients in guiding about a product and its environmental characteristics.

CD BioSciences-Advanced Materials focuses on products of advanced materials and related services. We offer state-of-the-art biodegradation analysis services to evaluate material degradation efficiencies in natural environments, such as soil and water bodies. Apart from this, we render certification and compliance assessment services to our clients in order that their products meet the international and local biodegradation requirements.
