The worldwide food industry is under mounting pressure to improve its sustainability and reduce its environmental footprint. The effective treatment of organic waste streams remains one of the foremost challenges. CD BioSciences provides modern AD (Anaerobic Digestion) full-chain solutions which alleviate environmental and economic concerns by anaerobically digesting food industry wastes. We have multidisciplinary capabilities on the lifecycle of AD projects from feasibility study to continual maintenance support, which helps our clients achieve favorable outcomes.

Our comprehensive anaerobic digestion full-chain solutions serve to meet various requirements within the food processing industry and transmute organic by-products and waste into biogas and nutrient-rich digestates. This all-inclusive service portfolio provides all phases such as pre-feasibility, detailed design, construction, commissioning, and post-operation management. We excel at designing these systems to enable straightforward incorporation into the operational food manufacturing plants so that interruptions are reduced and resource recovery is enhanced.
Technical Principles
Anaerobic digestion is an example of natural biological activity. It is the breakdown of organic material by microorganisms without the presence of oxygen. This process undergoes various stages including hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and methanogenesis. Biogas, which is mainly composed of methane and carbon dioxide, as well as nutrient-rich digestate, are byproducts of this process. In the case of our systems, these biochemical reactions are performed in a manner that maximizes efficiency and biogas yield.
Technical Features
- Optimized Mixing and Heating: Within an anaerobic digestion system this refers to the optimal maintenance of desired temperatures and substrate conditions in relation to microbial activity for anaerobic digestion.
- Gas Upgrading Compatibility: Pertains to the further designed biogas technologies, which allow easy connections to biomethane production systems.
- Robust System Design: Focuses on the strength and reliability of the system while processing diverse food wastes.
- Advanced Process Control: Controls focused on process adjustments and stability based on real time data collection through monitoring and automation.
- Nutrient Recovery Focus: Focuses on enhancing agricultural value while minimizing waste of treated residues.
Technical Classification
In relation to diverse project scales and their respective unique parameters, we offer a wide range of technologies for anaerobic digestion:
- Wet anaerobic digestion system: Designed for low solids pumpable food wastes like processing effluents and sludges. This systems make use of continuously stirred tank reactors (CSTRs).
- Dry Anaerobic Digestion Systems: These are designed for high solids (over 20%) feedstocks, such as stackable food waste including fruits and vegetables as well as packaged food waste which requires some pre-treatment. These types of systems usually utilize tunnel reactors or high-solids plug-flow systems.
- Multi-Stage Fermentation Processes: This method schizoid the various biochemical procedures of AD (such as hydrolysis/acidogenesis and methanogenesis) into separate reactors as vessel. With this method, the parameters for different microbial groups can be tailored which may result in more biogas production, better system stability, enhanced processing times especially for complicated and difficult feedstocks, and improved overall system biogas yield.
- Biochar Enhancement Systems: The addition of biochar into AD systems can be used effectively. In particular, biochar can offer the surface for microorganisms to colonize, adsorption of some inhibiting compounds, increased buffering capacity, and a possibility in methane yield as well as stability of the processes. We can design the steps of biochar addition into different phases depending on the particular system and feedstock.
Application Areas
Our AD solutions are applicable across a wide spectrum of the food industry, including:
- Fruit and Vegetable Processing Plants
- Dairies and Cheese Production Facilities
- Breweries and Distilleries
- Meat, Poultry, and Fish Processing Operations
- Bakeries and Confectionery Manufacturers
- Packaged Food Production Facilities
- Large-Scale Catering and Food Service Operations
Environmental Benefits
- Greenhouse Gas Reduction: Captures methane, a potent greenhouse gas, that would otherwise be released from landfilling organic waste.
- Renewable Energy Generation: Produces biogas, which can be used to generate electricity and heat, displacing fossil fuels.
- Waste Diversion from Landfills: Significantly reduces the volume of organic waste sent to landfills, extending landfill life and reducing associated environmental issues.
