Bio-based Coatings
Bio-based Coatings

Bio-based coatings are protective or decorative coatings that are derived from renewable biological resources rather than petroleum-based materials. Formulated with natural materials such as vegetable oils, resins, proteins and other organic materials, these coatings reduce dependence on fossil fuels and minimize environmental impact. Bio-based paints and coatings still only account for a small share of the coatings industry. The current market share is estimated at around 5%. Most of this may also come from natural raw materials with a long history.

Another advantage of using bio-based raw materials is that they are easier to extract and consume less energy when processed compared to fossil raw materials. This is a win-win situation, as this makes the overall CO2 balance significantly more favorable.

Utilizing Bio-based Raw Materials

Integrating bio-based raw materials into coatings products is an effective means of improving the carbon footprint of the final product. This process utilizes renewable resources derived from organic waste, such as non-edible seed shells and vegetable oils, which are carefully introduced into the production chain of the coatings. More interestingly, some raw materials are able to produce proteins as a by-product during processing, which can be used as fertilizer in the future, thus realizing the recycling of resources.

The use of the biomass balance process ensures that only the right amount of bio-based ingredients are added to the raw materials. As coatings manufacturers adjust the formulation according to performance requirements, the proportion of fossil-based materials can be gradually reduced, which provides potential benefits for environmental protection.

Why Use BIO Coatings?

Bio-based coatings are made from materials that replenish over time, such as crops, making them more sustainable than traditional coatings.

Lower Impact on the Environment Many bio-based coatings are designed to be biodegradable or less harmful to the environment than traditional coatings that release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other harmful chemicals.

Advances in technology have enabled bio-based coatings to achieve performance characteristics comparable to or even superior to petroleum-based coatings, including durability, adhesion, and weatherability.

How to Increase the Use of Bio-based Coatings

Improve the performance of bio-based coatings, such as durability, stain resistance and UV resistance, to make them more competitive in the market.

By developing new formulas, improve the construction performance of coatings, such as leveling, drying time and adhesion, making them more suitable for various application scenarios.

Research and develop methods to reduce production costs so that bio-based coatings have more price advantages and attract more consumers.
