Our biogas refining service specializes in the design, implementation, and optimization of sophisticated systems that purify raw biogas generated from the anaerobic digestion of food industry waste. This process not only addresses waste management challenges but also unlocks the economic potential of organic residues by producing high-purity biomethane suitable for use as a vehicle fuel, alongside opportunities for developing other valuable bio-products. We empower food processing companies to transform liabilities into assets, enhancing sustainability and creating new revenue streams.
Technical Principles
Our biogas refining systems employ a state-of-the-art, integrated approach combining Membrane Separation and Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technologies.
- Membrane Separation: In the initial stage, raw biogas (primarily methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), with trace impurities) is passed through specialized polymer membranes. These membranes exhibit selective permeability, allowing CO2, water vapor, and other smaller molecules like hydrogen sulfide (H2S) to pass through more readily than CH4. This results in a methane-enriched stream on one side of the membrane and a CO2-rich permeate on the other.
- Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA): The methane-enriched stream from the membrane unit undergoes further purification using PSA technology. This process utilizes adsorbent materials (e.g., activated carbon, zeolites) that preferentially adsorb CO2 and other remaining impurities like nitrogen (N2) and oxygen (O2) at high pressure. The gas stream flows through multiple beds of adsorbent. When one bed is saturated with impurities, the gas flow is switched to another bed, while the saturated bed is regenerated by reducing the pressure, releasing the adsorbed gases. This cyclical process allows for the continuous production of high-purity biomethane.
This synergistic combination ensures optimal separation efficiency, high methane recovery rates, and the consistent production of biomethane meeting stringent quality standards for vehicle fuel (e.g., >97% CH4).
Technical Features
- High Methane Purity: Achieves >97% methane concentration, suitable for vehicle fuel and grid injection.
- Excellent Efficiency & Recovery: Optimized integration minimizes methane loss and maximizes product yield.
- Robust Pre-treatment: Effective removal of H2S, moisture, and other contaminants protects downstream equipment and ensures final product quality.
- Modular Design: Scalable systems adaptable to various feedstock volumes and client requirements.
- Automated Operation: PLC-based control systems for continuous, unattended operation and remote monitoring.
Technical Classification
Our biogas refining systems can be classified based on:
- Feedstock Type: Primarily designed for biogas derived from food processing wastes, agricultural residues, and other organic materials.
- System Capacity: Ranging from small-scale on-site solutions for individual food producers to larger, centralized facilities processing waste from multiple sources.
- Purity Level: Systems tailored to achieve specific biomethane purity standards, including vehicle fuel grade (SAE J1616, ISO 15403) or for direct grid injection.
Application Areas
The primary application for the biomethane produced is as a renewable vehicle fuel for fleet vehicles, public transport, and heavy-duty trucks, offering a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels. Other applications include:
- Injection into the natural gas grid.
- On-site power and heat generation.
- Source for green hydrogen production.
- Development of high-value co-products from the captured CO2 stream (e.g., for food and beverage industry, dry ice production, or as a feedstock for chemicals).
Environmental Benefits
- Greenhouse Gas Reduction: Significantly lowers methane emissions (a potent GHG) from organic waste decomposition and displaces fossil fuels.
- Waste Valorization: Converts problematic food waste into valuable energy and resources.
- Improved Air Quality: Use of biomethane as vehicle fuel reduces particulate matter and other harmful emissions compared to diesel.
- Circular Economy Promotion: Closes the loop on organic waste, transforming it into renewable energy and soil enhancers (digestate).
- Enhanced Energy Security: Provides a locally sourced, renewable energy supply.
