Bio-Based Material Solutions

Bio-Based Material Solutions

At a global inflection point, the food industry faces mounting pressure to improve sustainability. CD BioSustainable develops biotechnologies to convert food by-products and renewable resources into value-added bio-based materials, functional ingredients, and foods. We help partners transition to circular economy models through strategic services, focusing on bio-based products like chitosan, biodegradable packaging, and Single Cell Protein (SCP)—green alternatives to fossil-based materials.

Technical Principles

We apply biotechnology and chemical engineering in practice. For chitosan, we deacetylate chitin from crustacean shells via alkaline deacetylation. Our biopolymers—including PLA, PHA, and starch blends—are processed by extrusion, thermoforming, or film blowing. Single Cell Protein (SCP) is produced through microbial fermentation, converting organic substrates like food waste into protein-rich biomass.

Technical Classification

Our technologies can be broadly classified as:

  • Biopolymer Extraction and Modification: This includes the isolation of natural polymers like chitin and its conversion to chitosan, along with further functional modifications.
  • Bioplastic Manufacturing: This involves the formulation, compounding, and processing of bio-based and biodegradable polymers into films, containers, and other packaging formats.
  • Fermentation Technology: This is central to SCP production and can also be applied to produce other bio-based chemicals and intermediates.

Application Areas

Our bio-based materials and technologies find diverse applications within and beyond the food industry:

  • Food Packaging: Biodegradable and compostable films, trays, and containers.
  • Food Ingredients & Preservation: Chitosan as a natural antimicrobial agent, clarifying agent, or edible coating to extend shelf-life.
  • Animal Feed & Aquaculture: SCP as a sustainable and protein-rich feed ingredient.
  • Agriculture: Chitosan as a biopesticide and plant growth enhancer.
  • Biomedical and Pharmaceutical: High-purity chitosan for drug delivery, wound healing, and tissue engineering (note: this is a high-value area, often requiring specific certifications).

Environmental Benefits

  • Reduced Carbon Footprint: Utilizes renewable resources and often requires less energy in production compared to fossil-based counterparts.
  • Waste Reduction: Valorizes food industry by-products, diverting them from landfills.
  • Biodegradability & Compostability: Our packaging solutions can break down naturally, reducing plastic pollution.
  • Reduced Reliance on Fossil Fuels: Offers alternatives to petroleum-derived plastics and proteins.
