Bio-Based Material Solutions

Bio-Based Material Solutions

In the global context, the food industry has reached an inflection point. It is now more than ever under scrutiny to improve its sustainability practices in terms of environmental impact and resource conservation. In light of these challenges, our company bio-based material solutions is focused on developing and advancing innovative sustainable biotechnologies with a view to optimally utilize by-products of the food industry and renewable biological resources through advanced biotechnological methods and transform them into packaged value-added bio based materials, functional ingredients, and foods. This section highlights our aggressive pursuit of innovation and sustainability in the food industry using modern biotechnology.

We offer bio based materials solutions as strategic services directed towards assisting partners from the food industry in the evolution towards circular economy models. Our primary focus is on the creation and production of bio based materials as well as high value added products from biological feedstocks. Several branches of biotechnology are represented in our scientific experience, including chitosan extraction and biotechnological production of biodegradable packaging materials and Single Cell Protein (SCP), which are offered as green substitutes for conventional products synthesized from fossil raw materials.

Technical Principles

Biotechnology and chemical engineering are both disciplines that we apply in practice. Regarding chitosan production, we normally apply the deacetylation of chitin process, which we obtain from crustacean shells (a by-product in the food industry) via alkaline deacetylation in a controlled environment. The production of these biopolymers involves polymer science and the engineering of biodegradable materials and includes biopolymers such as PLA (Polylactic Acid), PHA (Polyhydroxyalkanoates), or even starch blends which are processed by extrusion, thermoforming, or film blowing. Production of Single Cell Protein (SCP) is performed via microbial fermentation where some strains of yeast, bacteria, or fungi are grown on a wide range of organic substrates, like food processing waste or plant stems and leaves, which they quickly turn into a protein-rich biomass.

Technical Features

  • Resource valorization: We specialize in the processing of remaining streams from the food processing industry into new, marketable and high-value products with a greater economic potential.
  • Customization: Additional requirements can be set for the materials such as packaging and its barrier properties, or required grades of purity for the produced chitosan.
  • Scalability: Availability of bio-based materials is guaranteed as they are produced in scalable engineered systems.
  • Process Efficiency: Continuous improvements in extraction, fermentation, and manufacturing processes help streamline and increase resource efficiency.
  • Resource Valorization: Ensures that all processes in the production chain are done thoroughly to reduce waste and improve resource flow.

Technical Classification

Our technologies can be broadly classified as:

  • Biopolymer Extraction and Modification: This includes the isolation of natural polymers like chitin and its conversion to chitosan, along with further functional modifications.
  • Bioplastic Manufacturing: This involves the formulation, compounding, and processing of bio-based and biodegradable polymers into films, containers, and other packaging formats.
  • Fermentation Technology: This is central to SCP production and can also be applied to produce other bio-based chemicals and intermediates.

Application Areas

Our bio-based materials and technologies find diverse applications within and beyond the food industry:

  • Food Packaging: Biodegradable and compostable films, trays, and containers.
  • Food Ingredients & Preservation: Chitosan as a natural antimicrobial agent, clarifying agent, or edible coating to extend shelf-life.
  • Animal Feed & Aquaculture: SCP as a sustainable and protein-rich feed ingredient.
  • Agriculture: Chitosan as a biopesticide and plant growth enhancer.
  • Biomedical and Pharmaceutical: High-purity chitosan for drug delivery, wound healing, and tissue engineering (note: this is a high-value area, often requiring specific certifications).

Environmental Benefits

  • Reduced Carbon Footprint: Utilizes renewable resources and often requires less energy in production compared to fossil-based counterparts.
  • Waste Reduction: Valorizes food industry by-products, diverting them from landfills.
  • Biodegradability & Compostability: Our packaging solutions can break down naturally, reducing plastic pollution.
  • Reduced Reliance on Fossil Fuels: Offers alternatives to petroleum-derived plastics and proteins.
