Biological phosphorus removal works by alternating between anaerobic and aerobic conditions. In anaerobic conditions, PAO bacteria release phosphorus while absorbing organic substrates. When conditions switch to aerobic, these substrates are used to generate energy and cell mass, allowing the bacteria to absorb phosphorus for their growth.
