Medical Applications: Silver nanoparticles are widely incorporated into wound dressings and used as antiseptics and disinfectants in medical applications and consumer products. Silver nanoparticles have a high surface area per unit mass and release continuous levels of silver ions into their environment. Silver ions are biologically active and have broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties against a wide range of bacteria. By controlling the size, shape, surface and attachment state of the nanoparticles, a specific silver ion release profile can be developed for a given application.
